Top 10 best football skills in football history

In my top 10 best football skills compilation, I list tricks that the best footballers were specialists in. It was from them that we first saw these tricks, and it’s thanks to them that today’s footballers are inspired by them. Today, many of the world’s top footballers still use them on the pitch, and some have even been developed further. Football is changing, and with it the tricky moves, passes and shots. The rules, the tactics are not the same, but the game and the experience it gives the spectators is the same today as it was 100 years ago. Football has always been the most watched sport on earth. Hundreds of millions of people are fans of national football teams and football players from world famous club teams. Their goals scored and spectacular skills will forever be etched in the history books of football. I’ve picked out ten of their tricks that are sure to win you over, and you can learn them all if you like.

1. Kaneco Rainbow Flick

The earliest video footage dates back to 1968 and captured the rainbow flick. Alexandre de Carvalho Kaneco was credited with this never-before-seen trick, which even resulted in a goal. The Santos winger performed the trick at the right moment and then managed to pass the ball into the middle for a teammate to come on and score. You can see it at 1:30 in this video.

Kaneco said after the game that he dedicated this trick to Pelé. He had done the rainbow many times in training, but Pelé wasn’t sure if he could do it in a match. It worked! Santos won this football match 5:1 against Botafogo. And the rainbow flick became a favourite trick of all footballers from then on. Jay-Jay Okocha, Neymar, Robinho and many other world-class footballers have done it time and time again. It’s a difficult skill, but with practice you can learn it yourself with this tutorial: Rainbow Flick

2. Higuita Scorpion Kick

One of the most astonishing saves in football history was made by René Higuita in an England-Colombia friendly in 1995. Everyone agrees, perhaps even the goalkeeper, that it was an extremely risky stunt. In any case, he made football history. Probably no goalkeeper will ever try something like that again, and maybe that’s why football is so special, because sometimes you can see such unforgettable tricks. Since then, field players have also sometimes taken it, although not quite like this. It’s also a kind of scorpion kick, and it’s quite spectacular. You can learn here: Scorpion Kick Goal

3. Neymar Sombrero Flick

The sombrero flick is an invention of modern football. Its great masters were and still are Brazilian footballers. Typically known as the flick of Ronaldinho and Neymar, they made it famous and popular. The sombrero is the idea of suddenly lifting the ball over the opponent in the opposite direction. It is difficult to execute because you have to touch the ball twice very quickly with the same foot. In addition, all this has to be done in the air, in an instant. 4. Ronaldinho Elastico

Ronaldinho’s elastico trick is very effective, as it throws the opposing player off balance and the sudden change of direction allows the player to move forward unhindered. This was Ronaldinho’s innovation and no one else has ever done it so loosely in a football match. He executed the trick so effortlessly that it seemed almost natural, an unnatural movement. The flip-flap or elastico is one of Ronaldinho’s great inventions among his many sensational tricks.

5. Henry One Legged Rainbow

Thierry Henry was one of the most skilful footballers in the history of football. He performed amazing feats and entertained the crowd with his tricks. He had a loose, Latin culture of movement similar to Ronaldinho. This was combined with a kind of clean elegance. If he hadn’t played for France, I’m sure the Brazilian national team would have welcomed him. His starting speed and running pace also set him apart from other professional footballers. He had everything it took to become a world-class player, and he did. One of his most impressive feats was a one-footed rainbow trick. 6. Maradona Turn

The Maradona Turn trick is also called the two-footed trick. Both Maradona and Zidane used it frequently against their opponents. It has the advantage that it can be used between two or three players. You have to pull the ball slightly towards you with one foot, while turning so that you can pull the ball further with the sole of your other foot. This trick is also excellent because it can be used while running. Also known as the Marseille roulette, it was mastered by Zinedine Zidane alongside Maradona.

7. Heel to ball roll FIFA 23

I have listed this trick among the top 10 best football skills, the origins of which are unknown, as is who used it first. Typically seen in futsal matches, this trick makes the opponent believe that the ball will be passed with the heel of the foot. However, at the moment of the pass, the ball must be pulled back to its original position with the other foot. This happens very quickly, causing the opposing player to move in the wrong direction. This trick has become so popular that it will be included in the 2023 edition of the FIFA video game series.

8. Neymar Steps

This football trick was made famous by Neymar. The idea is to step over the ball before moving it, as if you want to move in that direction. At almost the same moment, there are further steps, but at this point the feet are touching the ball. Like dance steps, it’s also said to dance over the ball. It could be called the Neymar Dance. It needs a good sense of rhythm and ball control.

9. Henry Fake Pass

The fake pass is in the repertoire of many footballers. Often used in matches by Ronaldinho and Henry. This passing technique originated in the world of futsal. There are situations during the game when the use of this trick is particularly useful. The idea is not to pass the ball in the direction the opponent expects. There are several variations. One is when, instead of passing, you stop the ball with your foot and pull it back. The other is to step in front of it as if passing and pass the ball sideways with the other foot. The third is when you pretend to kick the ball, but you only kick witt your foot into the air. At the same moment, you pass the ball sideways with the supporting foot. You can also vary the moves and combine the tricks. A very spectacular football skill, a really entertaining move in football. Learn this trick from the fake pass tutorial video

The rainbow trick can be done in several ways. Each has its own charm and beauty, and of course its own technique. There is a version that you may have seen a few times from Roberto Carlos. This is the Air Rainbow version. It’s a complex trick because you have to do it while running. You have to keep the ball in the air with your feet while running. After a few meters, you carefully drop the ball in front of you and when it bounces, you step over it. After crossing, kick the ball with your heel in front of you.
